Windiga Energy inks PPA for 20-MW solar park in Burkina Faso

Oct 23, 2014 - Canadian renewable energy firm Windiga Energy has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for its planned 20-MW solar farm in Burkina Faso, enabling construction works to begin.

The contract for the construction and operation of the 20-MW facility in the Mouhoun province was signed with the National Electricity Company of Burkina Faso (SONABEL), Windiga Energy said on Wednesday. The developer will now aim to complete funding agreements with the private arms of development banks participating in the scheme.

Construction of the 20-MW solar park will require an investment of USD 50 million (EUR 39.5m). The plant is expected to be up and ready to run at the end of 2015, generating about 34 GWh of electricity per year. Once operational, the solar park will be the biggest of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa, Windiga Energy said.

Also on Wednesday, Windiga Energy said it has sealed a 30-year PPA with the Mauritanian Electricity Company (SOMELEC) for a 15-MW waste-to-power project, as well as a 20-year PPA with the Electricity Company of Ghana for a 20-MW solar project.
