Queensland Hydro picks contractors for 2-GW pumped storage project
Sep 18, 2024 6:05 CESTAussie renewables developer Windlab Ltd (ASX:WND) said today it has obtained an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) certificate for the construction of the up-to-300-MW Miombo Hewani wind farm in central Tanzania.
This is the first ESIA certificate to be issued in the country for a wind farm project, according to the announcement.
Windlab said it expects to construct the Miombo Hewani wind farm in phases, with the first one to be around 100 MW and include up to 34 turbines. The facility will be located to the north of Makambako. Once operational, Phase I will increase Tanzania’s grid capacity by over 5%.
“The wind resource pattern is biased towards night time generation and generation during the dry season in Tanzania, making it an ideal addition for Tanzania’s current and planned electricity generation mix,” Windlab CEO Roger Price stated.
The company has already secured an energy and environment partnership grant from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland and is looking forward to obtaining international development finance to fund the construction of the wind park.
