Windreich orders Alstrom Grid, SIAG Schaaf to build substation for MEG 1 wind farm

(SeeNews) – Jan 19, 2012 - German wind power developer Windreich AG has placed an order for the construction of a 400 MW transformer substation for the MEG 1 offshore wind farm with a team made up of Alstom Grid and German SIAG Schaaf Industrie.

The contract with the unit of French heavy engineering group Alstom (EPA:ALO) and the German power industry supplier includes the construction and installation of a helicopter deck, emergency power supply for the offshore wind farm as well as rooms for service personnel, Windreich said on Tuesday adding that the contract value is in the double-digit million euro range. High reliability will be achieved by using four 120 MVA transformers.

The construction will begin in the second half of the current year and will be completed by the autumn of 2013. A total of 80 wind turbines with a capacity of 5 MW each will be connected to the substation.

According to Windreich, the substation will have a perfect corrosion protection and will weigh a total of some 6,500 tonnes.

The wind park MEG 1 will be located some 45 km (28 miles) north of the island Borkum i the North Sea and will have a total capacity of 400 MW. The wind farm will produce some 1,700 million kWh of clean energy per year, which could be used by about one million people.

This is the second order of Windreich with Alstom Grid and SIAG Schaaf Industrie in the past twelve months. Alstrom Grid will supply the electrical equipment for the substation for the wind farm Global Tech I and SIAG Schaaf Industrie will provide 40 from the 80 steel foundations for the wind turbines.
