Canada’s Woodland Biofuels Inc on Tuesday unveiled plans to invest USD 1.35 billion (EUR 1.21bn) to build a renewable natural gas (RNG) plant, biofuel and green hydrogen production facilities at the Port of South Louisiana.

The Toronto-based company intends to use waste biomass to produce sustainable biofuel for the transportation, heating and power generation sectors. The complex it has proposed to establish will also include what it says will be the largest renewable natural gas production plant globally.

Woodland Biofuels anticipates the front-end engineering design (FEED) study for the selected site at the port’s Globalplex facility to be finalised in the second quarter of 2025, while a final investment decision is seen to be taken by end-2025.

The project, if it moves forward, is expected to open roughly 500 jobs during the construction phase. The proposed capacity is planned to be installed in phases, the first one of which will create the renewable natural gas production plant. The facility is set to begin initial production in 2028.

Louisiana Economic Development (LED) will back the scheme with an incentive package including a USD-10-million performance-based grant for infrastructure improvements.
