Australia-based energy services provider Worley Ltd (ASX:WOR) has won a new job from Shell plc (LON:SHELL) to assist the British oil major in transforming an existing site in Germany and preparing it for green hydrogen production with the installation of a 100-MW electrolyser.

Worley will first help Shell to convert its Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland near Cologne, Western Germany, into a base oil production unit that will be able to cover 9% of the EU and 40% of Germany's base oil demand. This project includes repurposing the on-site hydrocracker and electrifying the plant, which alone will cut Shell's scope 1 and 2 emissions by 620,000 tonnes annually.

Meanwhile, the two companies are working on enabling renewable hydrogen production at the facility under the project known as Refhyne II. Their current focus is on the work required to provide early front-end engineering and design (pre-FEED), FEED, detailed design and integration services.

Refhyne II envisages the installation of a 100-MW electrolyser with the capacity to produce up to 44,000 kg of renewable hydrogen every day for use to decarbonise Shell’s operations.

Refhyne II is a follow-up of Refhyne I, which involved the installation of a 10-MW PEM hydrogen electrolyser facility in 2021. A month ago, it was announced that ITM Power Plc will be the equipment provider for Refhyne II, which has already achieved a final investment decision (FID) and should be completed in 2027.

Worley is also working with Shell on its 200-MW Holland Hydrogen I (HHI) project in the Netherlands.
