Engineering consultancy WSP said today it has served as the technical advisory to the developer of the 44-MW Diaz wind farm in Namibia's harbour town of Luderitz.

The project is being developed by Diaz Wind Power and a joint venture between the United Africa Group and Quantum Power. According to WSP, the wind park will be selling power at lower rates than any of the existing generation plants in the country, aside from the Ruacana hydropower plant, and even compared to power imports.

The consultancy was involved in reviewing and evaluating the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract and the operations and maintenance (O&M) agreement proposals, it said in a statement. WSP’s experts also negotiated the power purchase agreement (PPA) and general services agreement documentation.

Moreover, WSP has conducted a detailed grid study, which has revealed that a wind park at the particular site could be expanded to 90 MW in the future.

Dinesh Buldoo, Director, Transmission and Distribution, WSP, Africa, commented that the consultancy expects to see a growing number of wind projects in Namibia, which pursues a 70% renewable energy scenario by 2030.
