Yara International ASA (OSE:YAR) on Monday officially announced the opening of its 24-MW renewable hydrogen plant at Herøya Industrial Park, with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre attending the inauguration ceremony.

The fertiliser company said in a statement that it has already delivered the first tonnes of fertilisers made from green ammonia produced at the site.

"We are very pleased to have delivered the first tonnes of low-carbon footprint fertilisers to Lantmännen, a partnership which serves as a concrete example of how collaboration across the entire food value chain is required to decarbonise. Together, we have made this important step towards decarbonising hard to abate sectors," commented Svein Tore Holsether, president and CEO of Yara.

Apart from green ammonia that is made using renewable power, the company will also rely on blue ammonia produced using carbon capture storage (CCS). Its low-carbon footprint fertilisers will be part of a new portfolio called Yara Climate Choice.
