Yemen, India sign MOU on 60-MW solar project - report

Apr 28, 2014 - The government of Yemen has sealed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Bharat Group of India for the construction of a 60-MW solar park.

The contract was signed by Yemen’s minister of electricity Saleh Sumai, Yemen News Agency Saba said on Saturday.

According to the report, the photovoltaic (PV) facility will be built at a cost of USD 100 million (EUR 72.3m) to be financed with a soft loan from the Indian government. Construction works are to be wrapped up between 10 and 12 months after the project is cleared by regulators.

When up and running, the solar park will generate electricity for Yemen’s capital Sanaa, the province of Socotra Archipelago and the island of Kamaran in Hodeida province.

Solar power has been recently gaining popularity in Yemen. In a report from January 2014, the Yemen Times said that people in rural areas are more often turning to solar power to cope with insufficient power supply. According to the report, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) has funded the development of about 12 solar schemes in Marib, Aden, Abyan, Lahj and Sanaa governorates.
