US consumer packaging specialist Graphic Packaging International LLC has signed a virtual power purchase agreement (vPPA) linked to 83 MW of new solar projects in Spain.

Spanish renewables developer-operator Zelestra, formerly known as Solarpack, announced the vPPA on Wednesday stating that it will build two solar farms -- Jose Cabrera and Socovos II -- to support the agreement in line with its customer-focused strategy.

Under the terms, Graphic Packaging will receive guarantees of origin matching approximately 86% of the solar farms’ output.

The procurement will contribute to Graphic Packaging’s science-based target to cut scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 50.4% by 2032 compared to 2021. The vPPA will also raise the share of its purchased renewable power in Europe to around 70%.

Schneider Electric provided advisory services and strategy management for the vPPA between Graphic Packaging and Zelestra, the latter added.
