Zimbabwe gives green light to 90-MW solar project

Zimbabwe gives green light to 90-MW solar project Solar system in Zimbabwe by meeco (www.meeco.net).

The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has recently granted a generation licence to local firm Triangle Solar System (TSS) for a 90-MW solar project in Chiredzi.

Paradzai Chakona, the businessman who leads the consortium behind the project, was quoted by daily newspaper The Herald as saying that the facility will be built at a total cost of about USD 88 million (EUR 77.6m).

According to Chakona, the project will help reduce Zimbabwe’s increasing dependency on power imports from neighbouring countries and will also create jobs.

The plan is to build the solar park on 241 hectares of land in two stages, each with a capacity of 45 MW. Construction work is seen to start in September or October and be finalised in the first half of next year. TSS has already identified a South African firm as the engineering and procurement contractor, Chakona has said.

The businessman has also mentioned that TSS will seek to realise more such projects in the future.
