Zimbabwean ammonium nitrate producer Sable Chemicals Industries Ltd is seeking a licence to build a 50-MW solar park that could be later expanded to more than 150 MW, The Zimbabwean Daily reports.

Citing Culvin Chipfumbu, technical director at Sable Chemicals’ subsidiary Tatanga Energy Pvt Ltd, the newspaper said that the photovoltaic (PV) plant will be installed to supply the company’s chemicals plant. A feasibility study on the project is ongoing.

The proposed solar farm will be located at the company’s site outside Kwekwe, in the central part of the country, and will mainly generate power for its ammonium nitrate manufacturing facility. Part of its output, of around 10 MW of the total capacity, will be fed into the national grid.

Sable Chemicals, part of the Masawara Group of companies, will build the power plant in stages. The company has already found development partners to finance the scheme, the company official said without providing names.
